I’m sure we all have a container hidden somewhere in our basement full of ugly Christmas garland. Well, I am going to share with you how to make cheap garland look expensive which rivals anything you could buy at Pottery Barn.
How To Make Cheap Garland Look Expensive
- Wired Garland
- Branches, twigs and stems from outdoors {faux twigs + branches work well too if you don’t want to use real}
- Dried oranges
- Ribbon of your choice
- Pruning shears
- 3M Command Cord Bundlers
- Fine Mist Sprayer
In my yard, I found several different types of “Chrismas-y” type branches. Be sure you give your branches a little shake or even spray them with water and allow them to dry just to be sure you don’t bring any critters.
After you collect and clean the branches, you will want to cut the twigs and branches down to size.
I chose to use pine, holly, and what I call “little Christmas trees” to create my garland. You will definitely want to wear gloves as you do this to protect your hands. You are going to use the “branches” on your faux garland to wrap your branches and twigs to hold them in place.
I attached all of my pine branches first and then hung the garland on the mantle to add the rest of my foliage. Using the 3M Command Cord Bundlers was a lifesaver and did a great job holding the garland. I did end up screwing the 3M bundlers to the mantle because I could not get mine to stick to it. If you have a mantle that isn’t wood, it may work better.
To give my garland a pop of color, I dried some oranges and attached them to the garland with ornament hooks. you can find the recipe HERE.
When it comes to decorating, I like layers so I chose a pretty plaid along with a satin black to create contrast on the garland.

To complete the look of my mantle, I added a couple of stockings along with some driftwood trees and white houses.
